Most Court Proceedings Suspended Until May 29th

A number of Florida court proceedings have been suspended throughout the state during the pandemic and state Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles Canady extended that.

All criminal and civil jury trials, jury selection and grand jury proceedings are on hold until at least May 29th.

But circuit and county courts will continue to perform "essential court proceedings."

"Examples of essential functions include first appearance bond hearings, felony criminal arraignments and hearings for injunctions for domestic violence, dating violence, repeat violence, sexual violence, stalking or prevention of child abuse."

Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg says the criminal justice system is NOT on hold.

"My prosecutors are in court 365 days a year, so if you're a victim of a crime please call law enforcement and our victim advocates will be there to help you."

Aronberg also says that crooks are taking advantage of the stay-at-home order, citing an uptick in car burglaries. He says the bad guys will be prosecuted, and that's not all.

"And they may be subject to an enhancement penalty that could take a misdemeanor to a felony or a third-degree felony to a second-degree felony."

Aronberg also urges residents to lock their car doors.

He says domestic violence crimes are increasing as well.
