Texas Grandmother Shoots Alligator As Revenge For Killing Her Mini-Horse

A Great-grandmother in Texas has taken revenge on an alligator that's been plaguing her family's farm for the last several years.

Judy B. Cochran, the mayor of Livingston, Texas finally got her revenge on a12-foot, 580-pound alligator that she believes once ate one of her prized mini-horses a few years ago she tells the Houston Chronicle.

"The gator was large enough it could have eaten the mini-horse and the other gators are much smaller," Cochran told NBC News. "The horse just came up missing and it was in the same pasture where the gator had been. To say for sure it's the same gator, I cant say for sure but I highly suspect."

Cochran was able to hook the massive gator after using raccoon roadkill as bait. Then, while the gator was on the line and unable to get away, the grandmother fired a single shot into the animal's head, killing it.

She tells NBC that she followed all the requirements for hunting the alligator and waited until the alligator was in season. Texas is one of the few states where alligators can be hunted for sport.

"There are a lot of requirements to kill a gator in Polk County," she explained to The Houston Chronicle. "We're one of 12 counties that has a hunting season for alligators, between Sept. 10 and 30. You have to have a permit and tags from a wildlife biologist, and you have to catch it on a hook first. We don't just go to the ranch and hunt a gator."
